Kaakkum Karangal Story

Kaakkum Karangal is a non-governmental, non-religious, non-profit; institution established in February 1992 with the aim of providing home for the homeless. This institution today shelters destitute men and women, differently abled children and old people who have been orphaned and forsaken with sky high ambitions to enlarge its scope and scale of services to larger number of people.

Kaakkum Karangal is a heaven for the old aged forsaken destitute and orphaned children. Presently, there are six homes housing 250 old aged citizens and 150 school going children and 10 spastic and infants, all are orphaned children. In our homes, we have inmates who are just one year old to those who are aged 90.

Kaakkum Karangal a social service oriented entity, founded in Feb. 1992, has as its main aim to give solace to forsaken destitutes who long for food, shelter and clothes. We admit such abandoned senior citizens of either sex above 60 years give them shelter, food and clothes at free of cost and medical aid and perform the last rites to the departed. Above all we give them love and respect which has been denied to them. We help them to feel their right place in society and live their last days with honour. In our endeavor, we look forward to the benevolent, broad minded people of society to involve themselves and help us to carry out our mission by donating not only money but also clothes, provisions, vessels and medicine. We also request you to provide other infrastructure needed for our sis units, functioning efficiently for the past 22 years.

With no one to care for the number of orphan children is on the increase. Deprived of the legitimate rights of life, these children, unless cared for at the right time, are likely to be parasites on the society. We admit such children and train them to become good members of society. We provide housing, food, clothes, education, medical aid and impart moral values of life. We strive to make them forget they are ‘Orphans’.

Many would be desiring to involve themselves in social service by helping voluntary institutions, but many not know the ways and means. We entreat you to approach us to fulfill your desire. You may opt to celebrate your birthday, wedding day, other auspicious functions, anniversaries of the departed in a different way by helping the help seekers. We invite you to be part in our service by providing meals, snacks or other facilities of your choice to our inmates.

VISION

MISSION

Brief History

In this vast country of ours, we are daily witnessing the pitiable sight of urchins and even grown up destitutes roaming around the streets of our city. Young and old Men & Women, Boys and Girls are seen searching out for themselves something to eat and in the night to find a shelter. They are considered as unwanted, worst and a nuisance to the comfortably placed citizens. We remain unconcerned. Heartily moved by the miserable state of affair, P. Gnanaraj hailing from South Tamil Nadu as depressed and dejected, tried searching for a way out of the deplorable situation. What he saw around him, made him to react for a while which changed his attitude towards life. So far, a selfish and self-centered man, started to think of others too. He saw others in greater distress than himself with no one to care for. Many old destitutes who had nowhere to go and no one to give minimum meal touched his heart. To gather these unfortunates, he took a house on a monthly rent of Rs. 600/- and gave shelter to half a dozen elders. Kind hearted people encouraged and supported him with whatever they could afford. It was in February 1992, there emerged “Kaappagam”, a home for homeless with humble beginning of “Kaakkum Karangal” as a Vintage unit with sky – high ambition to enlarge wings. Mr. P. Gnanaraj’s supreme sacrifice and indomitable courage, steadfastness and dedication made his dreams come true. A home started with six unwanted elders discarded by the society today shelters nearly 350 inmates. What was then a home for the old destitutes today takes care of orphan children, and cradle children also. Kaakkum Karangal is the most sought after by the poor and abandoned. Our arms are wide open to receive anyone and everyone provided he/she is really poor and no one to care for. It has earned a name for itself by its multifarious activities and its unique mode of approach.

We shall now have a glance about the various activities of Kaakkum Karangal functioning from 6 homes:

House Of Peace

This can stand out as a model home for elders. Every one above 60 years, men or women who have no one to care for no wealth or no other source of income are gladly taken in and given all that a normal human would need. There is no rigidity of age. Even young or middle aged women who are abandoned by their husbands are also admitted. These elders help one another and live in harmony and mutual adaptability. Here all shares the joy, pains and sorrows of one. None of these elders could ever think of a more comfortable place, given the circumstances from which they come. It is a Home away from home

House Of Smiles

The sting of poverty and hunger should not touch the tender hearts. With this aim, we have a home for young orphans. Mothers who have their children and have been abandoned by their husbands are compelled to struggle for existence for themselves and for their children. In most cases, they have no shelter and no protection. Such children are taken in and cared for and sent to schools. We provide them free food, clothes and shelter. The attention and care needed at this stage of their life will help to form them into responsible God fearing children and honorable future citizens. Good qualities are inculcated in them at the molding age. Children below 7 Years are also admitted.

Last Rites For The Deceased

Those elders who have run their race and fought their battles and even the last battle with life is over, are helped to pass on to eternity in peace and tranquility. When the final end comes, we take care of the last rites of each according to their religious customs.

For The Street Childtren – Hygienic Way Of Life

An Uncommon and innovative approach we have adopted in our care for the poor street children, is Bathing Children around Chennai. We go around the various slums of Chennai and give them a bath. A van for this purpose is fitted with a water – tank and our volunteers take care of this programme. After a refreshing bath, as a reward for such exercise and also as an incentive to urge them on to bathe daily. we present them with a Bathing – kit. Containing bathing and washing soap with a soap dish, Shampoo Sachets, Tooth – brush, tooth paste, hair oil, face powder, comb, a towel and a set of cloths to change into. To Crown all that they find snacks separately packed in it. With this, we hope to bring about in these poor street children a habit to keep themselves clean and make them realize that cleanliness is next to Godliness. This program of drive towards personal cleanliness will require at least Rs.300/- for a bathing kit, which we are confident will come from generous sponsors.

Free Tailoring Institute

As an extension of our service to the poor and downtrodden, we have started a tailoring institute exclusively for ladies in our children’s unit at New No. 125, Anna Street, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai – 41 to teach tailoring, free of Tuition fees to the poor and economically backward class girls and women, which may help them to get a good job with good remuneration.

We have appointed qualified tailoring instructors and put in service of 20 sewing machines, Nearly 50 girls and women are learning tailoring for six days in a week. They should attend the class for six months and after completion of that period, we issue a certificate which may help them to get decent jobs In garment export houses also.

Really, this is a boon to the poor and economically backward class girls and women. With this multi facetted institution that Kakkurn Karangal is, we hope with God’s grace and assisted by Godly people, that is each one of you to wipe out the tears and appease the hunger of atlea!,.it a few among the many we find every day in our streets.
